I got into town really early around 1 PM and still had no area where I was going to stay. Leavenworth is a fun little town and now I know why everyone know knew I was coming here, said such great things about it. It's a little Bavarian town, into the middle of Washington. Every sign and every building has a European flare. Even the Starbucks had a cute old-town looking sign. I walked through town looking for the fire station -- which I am sitting in right now now listening fire fighters talk crap with the sheriffs, they all a bunch of good people and super funny -- and found Mike and Dave and they said they were more than happy to take me in for the night and let me make myself at home. I took a nice hot shower, and did my laundry.
I decided pretty early in the day I was going to take Sunday off to rest up a bit, so I put my stuff in the room the firemen set up for me and I went into town to find a brewery to have a beer since I was in a Bavarian town in the middle of Washington. I found Icicle Brewery and say down with a delicious IPA and hung-out with a few kids from the area and talked about my Walk and ate some German pretzels and enjoyed the first bit of sun shine I had seen in the last week or so.
When I got back, everyone was gone on a call. So I hung out for awhile until they returned and found out they had been out on the highway were I walked by the day before and they were attempting to save a man who had fallen off a raft into the river but sadly, he pasted away. I can't go into too many details, but basically he had been in the cold water for too long. It was interesting to sit and listen to them talk about the events that occurred and how they could improve themselves next time. Just another day at work for them. For me, it was another moment to remind myself how life can be taken so quickly from you and to truly enjoy it while I'm here.
They took me out in the fire engine to go pick up food for dinner, and propane form the nearby camp.
It is so fun to see how happy people get when they see a fire engine. All the little kids smile and wave so frantically and the guys were nice enough to turn on the lights for them which they just went crazy for. Dinner was awesome with cod, pasta, salad and garlic bread. Thanks Marco and Mike!
