This morning started with Ted dropping me off the Dupont bus station where I was to begin my 20 mile day up to Point Defiance where the ferry would be picking me to go to Vashon Island. It started off well enough with some clouds and occasional sun. I walked past parts of the fort where the shooting ranges are, and stopped for a moment while a bunch of guys opened fire at their targets and watched as the helicopters flew over head.
As the day wore on, it became much more cloudy and started to cool off. I stopped in a beautiful little town called Steilacoom on the water and ate lunch. I'm so glad that's where I stopped because soon after, it started to rain and not only rain, but pour with crazy-bad winds. It was a great test for BMW and my canopy (thank you Steve!!! It worked great!!!) It was also a good test for my gear, my Gortex Inov8 shoes held up well, and my Mountain Hardware rain jacket worked beautifully. I love that jacket, it breathes! It's a little pricey, but totally worth it.
I walked through another town called University Place and it was still raining and cold. I needed to use the restroom pretty badly and I finally found a Walgreens but I couldn't find anywhere to lock up BeadMW! Luckily for me, there were some really nice firemen standing out front waiting to fill their propane tanks, who graciously offered to watch BMW for me. Like I've said before, firemen are so awesome!
I finally got to Point Defiance and Tom came to pick me up to take me back home. They had a beautiful view of Vashon Island, and the cutest Elementary across the street. Tom, Jewels and I had a lovely dinner of pork loin and apples. They have two adorable whippets, Maddie and Henery. Their son, Chris came over a little while later and had desert with us. It was such a nice evening and I was pretty excited that I was going to spend the next day with them as well.
