Today marks my 4 month mark! So instead of writing about my day, which the only highlight was the nice man at the restaurant who made my pizza gave it to me for free :), I want to share what i wrote in Facebook, in case there are people reading this that don't really know what I am doing:
Hello All!
For those of you who have recently "Liked" my page, welcome! My name is Stacie, and I am Walking across America for an organization called Beads of Courage -- an organization that provides innovative, arts-in-medicine supportive care programs for children coping with serious illness, their families and the health care providers who care for them.
The basic program for BOC is this: For every procedure a child in treatment receives, they get a bead; for every shot, a black bead, blood transfusion means a red bead, glow-in-the-dark for radiation, and so-on. Sounds so simple, and yet, they are so powerful and can completely transform a child's day. Just because they know, at the end of the day, they will have more beads to add to their collection; their own, unique story of life, told through beads. To let the world know, "Look what I have gone through, look how COURAGEous and strong I am."
I Walk with little shoe beads to give out to the kids at the hospitals I visit. To show them they are not a lone, and that "I am walking stride for stride with them in their COURAGEous journey through life." Every $10 donated, sponsors one of my beads and one of my miles. My goal is to have every mile sponsored, that's means $38,000 for Beads of Courage!
Many people ask me what the money I raise for BOC goes towards. Good question. The beads in the Beads of Courage programs, for the most part, have to be purchased. They ARE NOT ALL donated! (Everyone has to make $$) So the money goes to buying the countless beads that are given out to the 150+ hospitals world-wide, and of course, the cost of shipping all those beads. They're not exactly lite when you have to ship a few thousand...
