Good grief, what a day. 10 hours to go 26 miles.
I started off my day just fine. Walked down a small highway until I hit a dirt road. "No problem, it looks smooth enough." and it was for a while. But eventually it got pretty bad to be pushing my cart on and after about 10 miles of grueling work, I admitted defeat, and turned south to go back to the Old Highway to Mitchell, adding 2 miles onto my route.
I did come across the nicest Labrador ever. He followed me for 3 miles or so before his owner came and found him. His name is Gunner, and the man was very nice to me, offering cold water and snacks. But the dog DID NOT want to come with him. He came running over and sat right next to me. I got a good laugh, but the owner ended up having to pick him up to put him on the back of the ATV he was driving.
It was pretty hot out, and humid. So my progress the rest of the day was slow, because I stopped to take cool down breaks since there wasn't much of a breeze. I FINALLY got to Dave's apartment, my next host from Warmshowers.com, Jessica back in Chamberlain called him for me. He wasn't home yet, so his landlord invited me over for a brauts, corn, and beans dinner. Little did I know that he, Tom, and his wife, Mary, had most of their family over. So I ate with them, drank some wine, and told some of my stories. Dave came over around 8, and we all discussed where I would be staying for the next few nights. It ended up being a great way to end a rather stressful day.
